Witch Night – a passage from winter to spring

30 April, Witch night, in the Czech Republic is a ritual that dates back for ages.  Bon fires are built on hill tops to celebrate the passage of winter to spring.  Winter is ceremonially brought to an end by burning of rag and straw witches or broomsticks on bonfires.  The celebration starts at sunset and continues through the night.  As the fire burns down to ambers, smaller fires are set for roasting sausages and great quantity of beer is drunk through the night.
